SUStainable classic dolls
Along with the later part of my tenure at Disney I became the point person for sustainability with our Corporate Citizenship team. I worked with our vendors and sourcing team come up with a structure with my packaging engineer & design team to come up with a dieline that would keep the doll structurally in place, hair intact, in a completely plastic free box. No ties, nothing. We also used soy inks.
One of the hurdles when approaching a challenge like this, is we are told by most people that it can’t be done, or it would be too expensive. We wanted to achieve it and not only make it happen, but also make it exciting! We wanted to make the doors part of the story. We wanted it to be an experience of the film. Some of these boxes the 3D art or even backgrounds didn’t exist in the films and we had it created for some of the older films, which was very challenging under time restraints, but am overall really happy with the result.
PRINCESS CLASSIC DOLLS
This is the only project I think every single person from my team worked on it. Truly a group effort and it was one of the most talked about program I have worked on throughout the company.
Paper:
Our Princess Classic Doll box contains 2 types of paper (CCNB + e-flute/corrugate). The e-flute paper is used in the middle layer of the box. The surface layers (front & back) that requires 4c printing use CCNB paper. The surface layers (front & back) that requires 4c printing use CCNB paper. The e-flute paper can’t achieve the same print quality as CCNB paper.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification:
This is an international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible forestry. We used FSC MIX logo based on the research and recommendations from the printer.
FSC 100% = 100% paper from FSC even new / recycled.
FSC MIX = The packaging contains 70% FSC paper.
FSC Recycled = The packaging contains over 85%
FSC recycled paper.
Inks:
Per printer, soy inks are made from soybeans and instead of traditional petroleum-based ink.
